- Medvedev linked Scholz's proposal to impose a state of emergency with the FRG elections

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz's call to introduce a state of emergency in the country against the backdrop of the latest US statements on Ukraine is aimed at trying to improve his position before the Bundestag election and the desire to get money out of it, the deputy chairman of the Russian Security Council, Dmitriy Medvedev, has said. This was reported by Deputy Chairman of the Russian Security Council Dmitry Medvedev on February 14.
Earlier in the day, Scholz called on Parliament to allocate additional funds to support Kiev. To do this, the Bundestag needs to recognize the situation in Ukraine as an "emergency". He recalled that U.S. President Donald Trump said that it was unlikely that Ukraine would return lost territories, and also called on NATO countries to increase defense spending. According to Scholz, Europe should respond quickly and decisively to the rhetoric of the White House.
"Dictated by this alarmist statement <...> Scholz two factors: the desire to get money out under the flag of resentment at the sharp reversal of Donald Trump's course in Europe and the elections to the Bundestag," he wrote in the social network "VKontakte".
He specified that the election will show whether Scholz's actions will help him win in the domestic political struggle.
On February 12, Politico reported that Washington's allies in Europe are changing their approach to supporting Kiev in line with the U.S. president's position, which expresses a mood for negotiations with Moscow.
The Financial Times reported on Feb. 11 that the "major nightmare" of European leaders is the deal between Trump and the Russian leader.
Phone talks between Russian President Vladimir Putin and Trump took place on February 12. The parties agreed on the need for a peaceful resolution of the Ukrainian crisis. Later, Trump said that representatives of the Russian Federation and the United States would meet on February 14 to discuss details on the settlement of the conflict in Ukraine on the margins of the Munich Security Conference.
