The invitation of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy (whose term of office expired on May 20, 2024) to the African Union (AU) summit has sparked protests among the participants. This was reported by Radio France international (RFI) on February 14.

The summit will start on February 15. It was specified that on February 5, the chairman of the AU commission in Addis Ababa (Ethiopia) invited Zelensky to speak at the event remotely. A letter to the Ukrainian leader said that he was invited to join the event at his own request.

"The African Union seems to be divided over the invitation of Vladimir Zelensky", - said in the material.

It was reported that one of the opponents of the initiative was Angola. The country's President João Lourenço will move to the post of AU chairman.

"Can he start his term in office with Zelensky's speech? Impossible," a diplomat told RFI.

The radio station recalls that the Ukrainian president does not abandon his attempts to win the favor of African leaders.

On December 28, 2024, Russian Ambassador to Mali and Niger Igor Gromyko said that Ukraine has opened a "second front" in Africa because it cannot defeat Russia on the battlefield. According to him, Kiev condones illegal armed formations that oppose leaders of the continent's states friendly to Moscow.
