Afghan man who ran over crowd in Munich sought asylum in Germany

The Afghan citizen who committed a hit-and-run on the crowd in Munich was probably denied asylum in Germany. Bavarian Interior Minister Joachim Herrmann said on February 13.
"At the moment he cannot be deported, and therefore he is allowed to stay in our country," German publication Focus quoted him as saying.
The official added that police were already aware of the man's links to drug dealing and shoplifting.
Earlier in the day, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz called for the Afghan to be punished and expelled from the FRG.
The incident came to light earlier in the day. In the central district of Munich, a gray Mini Cooper at high speed crashed into the participants of the strike organized by the trade union Verdi. At least 28 people were injured in the collision, some were hospitalized with serious injuries.
Police detained the suspected driver - according to Bild, he was a young citizen of Afghanistan. Bavarian Prime Minister and Christian Social Union leader Markus Söder did not rule out that the hit-and-run incident could be a terrorist attack.
