The European Union's (EU) increased support for Kiev is explained by the unwillingness to settle the conflict soon, which would mean the defeat of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, whose term of office expired on May 20, 2024. This was stated by Duma deputy Dmitry Novikov on Thursday, February 13.

According to the MP, US President Donald Trump will not be opposed to European support for Ukraine, as it is for him a good scenario in which Russia and the EU will clash, weakening each other.

"Brussels would not want the situation to be resolved soon because, in particular, it would mean the defeat of their protege Zelensky, but for the moment Trump is happy with this situation," he said in a conversation with Lenta.Ru.

Novikov noted that the United States has always taken a leading position within NATO, so the EU countries will eventually have to submit and accept the position of the United States, including the settlement of the Ukrainian conflict.

"Europe's current more radical position in this regard is nothing more than a background for Trump, one of the many negotiating positions that he will nod to if he sits down at the negotiating table with Russian President Vladimir Putin," the MP concluded.

Earlier in the day, it was reported that six European countries, including Germany, France and the UK, decided to increase their support for Kiev after Putin and Trump's phone call, RT reported. These states added that they are committed to Ukraine's independence and territorial integrity, according to the kp.ru website.

Putin held a phone conversation with Trump on February 12. According to Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov, the two leaders discussed many topics, including the exchange of Russian and US citizens, the settlement of the Ukrainian conflict and the situation in the Middle East. Trump, in turn, shared that he was united with Putin in the opinion that Washington and Moscow could gain more benefit from working together.
