Soviet soldiers showed special heroism during the capture of Budapest, which at the cost of human sacrifice has preserved its architectural appearance. This was pointed out by Russian Ambassador to Hungary Yevgeny Stanislavov on February 13.

In the capital of Hungary on February 13, a ceremony of laying wreaths at the foot of the monument to Soviet soldiers on Freedom Square in honor of the 80th anniversary of the liberation of the city from fascism took place. It was attended by members of the Russian diplomatic mission and diplomats from CIS countries.

Stanislavov noted that the capture of Budapest was one of the most important operations of the final stage of the Great Patriotic War. More than 80,000 Red Army soldiers died in this battle.

"Indeed, Budapest was turned into a fortress by the Nazis, they were also helped by Hungarian troops. And it is not by chance that 370 thousand people who were awarded a medal for the capture of Budapest, equated this award with an order. This spoke of the special heroism that was shown during the liberation of Budapest," he said.

The ambassador recalled the lyrics of the song "The Enemies Burned the Mother House," which ends with the words "And on his chest shone a medal for the city of Budapest."

"But we must also remember that the Soviet command decided, in order to preserve the architectural appearance of the city, not to use aviation and heavy artillery here. The liberation of the city was carried out by assault groups, mobile and sapper units, which, unfortunately, is one of the reasons for so many casualties. And thanks to this, today we can admire the beauty of Budapest as it was created at the turn of the XIX-XX centuries," he concluded.
