NATO to establish a patrol mission in the Baltic Sea

NATO countries will set up a mission under which the alliance's warships will patrol the Baltic Sea. This was announced by Polish National Defense Minister Wladyslaw Kosiniak-Kamysz at a press conference in Brussels on February 13.
"NATO has established a new mission of the Baltic Guard, the Baltic Sea Guard, this kind of Navy Policing, which is created by all countries - not only the countries in the Baltic," Kosiniak-Kamysh said.
The Baltic Sea patrols will be modeled after the Air Policing mission, in which alliance aircraft are on duty 24 hours a day in NATO airspace. Kosiniak-Kamysh added that Warsaw had pushed the initiative as EU presidency.
Estonian broadcaster ERR reported on January 18 that NATO warships began patrolling in the Baltic Sea as part of Operation Baltic Sentry.
On January 7, Finnish broadcaster Yle reported that NATO was going to send a fleet to the Baltic Sea to protect important underwater installations. According to him, it will consist of about 10 ships, and the operation itself will last until April. At the same time, it was specified that the forces of the Finnish and Estonian fleets would still be involved in the protection of the Gulf of Finland.
