The election of former speaker of the Greek legislature Costas Tasoulas as the new Greek president is the result of an internal political agreement within the ruling New Democracy party. This was stated by Enes Karakhanov, chairman of the International Center for Countering Crime and Terrorism and international political scientist, in a conversation with Izvestia on February 12.

"For New Democracy, the nomination of Tasoulas is a continuation of the course for managed stability, minimization of electoral shocks and demonstration of policy continuity in the eyes of both the domestic audience and foreign partners," Karakhanov said.

According to him, despite the fact that in a parliamentary republic the president is vested with symbolic rather than real levers of power, the election of Tasoulas reflects the mood of the political class and the current vector of Greece's development.

"The arrival of Tassoulas as President of Greece, despite the limitations of his powers, may become an indicator of further consolidation of New Democracy's power and predictability of the foreign policy course. However, with geopolitical instability continuing to grow, the question of Greece's strategic choice is still open," the political scientist clarified.

Karakhov emphasized that the country is under simultaneous pressure from the United States and the European Union while having to take into account economic and energy ties with Russia.

"Greece balances its obligations to the European Union, military agreements within NATO and a strategically cautious position in relations with Russia," the expert explained.

In addition, as Karakhov added, Greece seeks to reduce its dependence on Russian gas, but favorable contracts continue to keep Greece in the zone of energy cooperation with Moscow.

"In this context, the country's leadership faces a choice: either strengthening integration with the EU and the US or finding compromise solutions with Russia taking into account common economic interests," he summarized.

The fact that the Greek Parliament elected a new president of the country Kostas Tasoulas became known earlier in the day. The candidacy of Tasoulas was put forward by the country's Prime Minister and leader of the ruling party "New Democracy" Kyriakos Mototakis. According to the results of the fourth round of voting in Parliament, Tasoulas won 160 votes out of 151 necessary. It was specified that the future head of state is the first president of Greece, who was actually elected by the votes of only the ruling party that nominated him.
