Breakthroughs in relations between Russia and the United States are still far away, despite the telephone conversation between Russian President Vladimir Putin and US leader Donald Trump. This opinion was expressed by Konstantin Kosachev, vice-speaker of the Russian Federation Council, on February 12.

"I am sure that there is still a long way to go before breakthroughs - too many problems have accumulated and for too long Trump's predecessors in the United States and politicians in a number of NATO countries who retain power to this day have consciously and maliciously obstructed any progress," Kosachev wrote in his Telegram channel.

At the same time, the deputy speaker of the Council of Federation noted the content of the last telephone conversation between the two leaders. According to him, these talks laid the foundation for further contacts. He pointed out that further development of the situation will depend on how quickly and qualitatively it will be possible to prepare a meeting between Putin and Trump.

"To the leaders of Russia and the United States - sincere words of gratitude for the fact that today's conversation at least took place, and at most - turned out," Kosachev added.

And whether they contribute to warming between the countries and finding a solution to the Ukrainian crisis

The phone conversation between the two leaders was reported earlier in the day by Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov. The press secretary of the Russian President noted that during the conversation discussed the topic of conflict resolution in Ukraine. It is specified that Putin pointed to the need to eliminate the root causes of the conflict and agreed with Trump that a long-term settlement can be achieved through peaceful negotiations. In addition, the Russian leader invited Trump to Moscow.

Trump, in turn, called the phone conversation with Putin long and productive. According to him, he and Putin agreed that the Russian Federation and the States will benefit greatly from cooperation, but first it is necessary to stop the Ukrainian conflict.

The previous day, the US leader said that the White House administration's close contacts with Moscow and Kiev had resulted in significant progress in the settlement of the Ukrainian conflict over the past week.
