Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky (term expired May 20, 2024) said in an interview with The Economist on Feb. 12 that martial law may end after a cease-fire with Russia is reached.

"The hot phase <conflict> will end. If it ends, martial law will also end, I guess. I don't know," Zelensky responded to a related question.

He added that, in his opinion, a ceasefire is impossible without security guarantees to Ukraine from Western countries. Zelensky admitted that Ukrainians are feeling tired and downcast due to the ongoing conflict.

The Ukrainian leader also reminded that if martial law is lifted, elections should be held in his country.

On the eve of the American entrepreneur and billionaire Ilon Musk criticized Zelensky's statements about elections in the country. In an interview with ITV News, an excerpt of which the businessman published on the social network X (former Twitter), the head of the Kiev regime said that the entire population of Ukraine "opposes elections" while the conflict continues, and wrote the comment "Of course".

Zelensky said on Feb. 1 that he expects negotiations on a peaceful settlement of the Ukrainian conflict to begin with the participation of Moscow, Kiev, Washington and Brussels. In his turn, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said that the Russian Federation considered the Ukrainian leader's words as empty.

According to the provisions of the Ukrainian Constitution, Zelensky's presidential term ended on May 20, 2024. Elections were supposed to be held in March this year, but they were canceled due to the martial law in Ukraine imposed by the president, which has been in effect since February 24, 2022.
