Counterfeit perfumes can be unpredictable in use and pose a serious risk to human health. This was reported on February 12 by Associate Professor of the Department of Inorganic Chemistry named after A.N. Reformatsky RTU MIREA Andrei Dorokhov. A.N. Reformatsky RTU MIREA Andrei Dorokhov.

He noted that real perfumes undergo strict safety tests. In turn, fake perfumes due to lack of control over the production process contain substances that can decompose under the influence of light, heat or air and form harmful compounds.

These compounds, according to the expert, can cause allergic reactions, skin irritation, rashes, headaches, respiratory system problems and poisoning.

In addition, counterfeit perfumes often contain the wrong concentration of active ingredients, Dorokhov said. He added that excessive content of some components can cause skin burns or damage hair.

"Instead of high-quality ethyl alcohol used in originals, fakes may use methanol - a poisonous substance that can cause serious poisoning," the associate professor explained in a conversation with "Gazeta.Ru".

Dorokhov emphasized that long-term use of unoriginal perfumes can provoke chronic diseases, such as dermatitis, eczema and even skin cancer.

"People with sensitive skin and a tendency to allergies are particularly at risk. Studies show that fake perfumes can even contain carcinogenic substances that can cause cancer," the expert concluded.

Earlier, on December 26 last year, cosmetologist-dermatologist Natalia Zhovtan told "Izvestia" about how to choose a safe perfume for health. She noted that often among the ingredients of perfumes can be found methanol, the content of which leads to fatigue, irritation of the eyes and upper respiratory tract, loss of muscle coordination.

According to the expert, the ingredients in non-original perfumes are capable of transforming into formalin, which can lead to liver cancer, cause nausea, dizziness and migraines.
