Russia is concerned about the events in Sudan and wants to help normalize the situation in the country. Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said this during talks with Sudanese Foreign Minister Ali Yousef Sharif on February 12.

Lavrov called Sudan and Russia "good friends" and pointed to Russia's concern over the dramatic events taking place in Sudan.

"We want to contribute to the normalization of the situation together with other external players, and in this regard I will be grateful for your assessments of what is happening and your vision of possible additional steps to promote a speedy peaceful settlement," the Russian foreign minister said.

Earlier, in November 2024, acting Sudanese Deputy Foreign Minister Hussein Al-Hajj said that Russia could help end the conflict in Sudan by playing a key role in its resolution.

Prior to that, in September, it was reported that Sudan's army had launched a large-scale offensive on the capital Khartoum to dislodge Rapid Reaction Force (RRF) fighters from the city and that fierce fighting was taking place. Lavrov said at the time that Russia was trying to facilitate a settlement.

The situation in Sudan escalated in mid-April 2023 due to disagreements between the commander-in-chief of the Sudanese Armed Forces Abdel Fattah al-Burhan and SIS chief Mohammed Hamdan Daglo. On the morning of April 15, clashes between the army and special forces began near a military base in the city of Meroe and in Khartoum. The ongoing conflict has created a humanitarian crisis in the country, leading to famine and disease outbreaks.
