Former parliament speaker Tassoulas elected president of Greece

The Greek Parliament elected the former speaker of the legislative body Kostas Tasoulas as the new president of the country. This was reported by the Greek edition of News 24/7 on February 12.
According to the results of the fourth round of voting held in Parliament, Tasoulas won 160 votes out of 151 necessary.
The candidacy of Tasoulas was nominated by the Prime Minister of the country and leader of the ruling party "New Democracy" Kyriakos Mototakis. It is specified that the future head of state is the first president of Greece, who was actually elected by the votes of only the ruling party that nominated him.
"He is the first president of the Republic elected after the revision of the constitution in 2019, in which the procedure for electing the supreme ruler of the state was not linked to the announcement of early elections and thus made the consent of the government and the opposition unnecessary in practice," the publication explained.
Earlier, on June 3, 2024, Mitsotakis denied reports about his intention to head the European Commission (EC). At the time, he also said that he would support the current head of the EC, Ursula von der Leyen, taking into account national interests.
