US Vice-President JD Vance should not sign any documents with Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelenskyy (whose term of office expired on May 20, 2024). This was stated by Professor Tuomas Malinen of the University of Helsinki on February 12.

"Since he (Zelensky. - Ed.) is leading under martial law, the document signed by him, including the peace treaty, is null and void under international law," he wrote in the social network X (former Twitter).

Earlier, on February 9, the New York Post (NYP) reported that the US Vice President will meet with Zelensky at the Munich Security Conference, which will be held on February 14-16.

On February 8, American President Donald Trump said that he expects to meet with the Ukrainian leader next week, with whom he intends to discuss the security of Washington's assets, which include rare earth metals. He also confirmed that he maintains his intention to speak with Russian President Vladimir Putin. Trump reiterated that he and Putin have always had good relations.

On February 1, Zelensky said that he expects the start of negotiations on the peaceful settlement of the Ukrainian conflict with the participation of Moscow, Kiev, Washington and Brussels. For its part, the Kremlin said that the Russian Federation considered the Ukrainian leader's words as empty.

Before that, in January, the Russian president reminded that "anyone" could negotiate with Russia from the Ukrainian side, but legitimate people should sign the documents on the results of the decisions.

According to the provisions of the Ukrainian constitution, Zelensky's presidential term ended on May 20, 2024. Elections were supposed to be held in March of the same year, but they were canceled due to the martial law in Ukraine imposed by the president, which has been in effect since February 24, 2022.

The special operation to protect Donbass, the beginning of which was announced by the Russian Federation on February 24, 2022, continues. The decision was taken against the backdrop of the worsening situation in the region.
