Bulgarian MEP rejects increase in military spending

Sofia will not go for an increase in military spending as demanded by US President Donald Trump, Bulgarian MEP and member of the Renaissance party Rada Laikova told Izvestia.
"Currently we have serious problems with the budget deficit, and any additional spending will only increase it even more. Therefore, we do not agree now with the increase in defense spending," the politician stressed.
Earlier, Trump demanded from the US European NATO allies to increase military spending to 5% of GDP. In response, Bulgarian President Rumen Radev said that the country will not be able to increase spending to this level, now Sofia spends more than 2% of GDP on defense.
