The administration of US President Donald Trump may impose sanctions against Odessa Mayor Gennadiy Trukhanov. This was reported by The Washington Mail on February 11, citing sources.

According to unnamed sources of the publication, the U.S. authorities are increasingly concerned that Trukhanov was involved in the work of a criminal group from Odessa, as well as that the mayor owns shares in four offshore companies, which are registered in British "tax havens".

According to the newspaper's sources, the US sanctions may affect Trukhanov's future political fate, as well as Odessa's cooperation with American partners.

Earlier, in May 2023, Trukhanov was arrested, accused of embezzlement of over 92 million hryvnias (almost 195 million rubles). According to the prosecution, the official implemented a scheme to buy the building of the former Krajan plant into municipal ownership at an inflated cost. The criminal case was initiated in 2018. In July 2019, the court acquitted all the defendants in the case on the purchase of the building of the former plant. In February 2021, the VAKS canceled the acquittal verdict. Later it became known that bail was paid for the mayor, after which he left the pre-trial detention center
