The State Duma assessed the idea to ban giving children unusual names

Chairman of the State Duma Committee on Family, Women and Children Nina Ostanina assessed on Tuesday, February 11, the idea to ban giving children unusual names.
"As a deputy, I consider only those initiatives that have already received the appropriate formalization and are called "legislative initiative in the form of a bill." I have not seen anything like this, except for media reports. I am afraid that this is where it will end. I do not comment on stupid initiatives," she said in a conversation with Lenta.Ru.
February 10, First Deputy Chairman of the State Duma Committee on Family Protection, Paternity, Maternity and Childhood Tatyana Butskaya said that deputies have developed a new bill aimed at limiting the use of strange names for children, reports 360.ru.
She specified that this bill was conceived a long time ago. Initially, it prohibited calling girls by male names, and boys by female names. But the draft was revised, as a result of which parliamentarians decided to create a "closed list" of authorized names, RT reports.
According to Butskaya, the document will be tabled as soon as the authorized names are determined. She added that at the moment the text of the bill is already ready.
Earlier, on January 30, 2024, the State Duma called for allowing a child to change his or her name because of bullying without parental permission. Deputy speaker of the State Duma Vladislav Davankov addressed the relevant proposal to the Ministry of Labor of the Russian Federation. According to him, children with unusual or rare names often face bullying at school.
