Candidate of Medical Sciences, doctor, neurologist, epileptologist, psychotherapist Olga Golubinskaya told on Tuesday, February 11, how to help a person during an epileptic seizure.

"The main thing is not to traumatize the patient. If he falls - try to pick him up and gently put him down, call an ambulance. We need to make sure that there is nothing sharp nearby. We put him on his side so that saliva flows, or hold him so that the amplitudes of movements mechanically do not traumatize the person," - explained the expert in conversation with "Radio 1".

She added that epilepsy is localized and it is important to understand that it is a discharge from a certain area of the brain: frontal, temporal, occipital or parietal.

"Sometimes there are seizures that in the time of Hippocrates were classified as hysteria. It happens and obscene behavior, and night sudden, chaotic movements - the cause can only be found out by a specialist", - concluded the neurologist.

In turn, the chief freelance neurologist of the Ministry of Health of the Russian Federation Nikolai Shamalov dispelled several popular myths about epilepsy, reports 360.ru. He noted that genetics affects the development of the disease only in a small number of cases - approximately 5-10%. In most situations, the cause of epilepsy are head injuries, infections, strokes and other factors, the doctor explained.

The day before, Vasily Nogovitsyn, MD, neurologist and epileptologist at the European Medical Center (EMC), told Izvestia that during an epilepsy attack, the work of the brain is disturbed. A person loses the ability to objectively assess what is happening, to speak, to plan actions.

According to him, myoclonic seizures are characterized by shudders of any parts of the body. Consciousness at the same time can be preserved. In addition, turning the head or moving the gaze to the side, raising and straining one of the hands, repeated movements of the lips are also signs of the beginning of an epilepsy attack.

International Epilepsy Day has been celebrated since 2015 on the second Monday of February.
