The root causes of the Ukrainian conflict should not be forgotten when discussing scenarios for resolving the crisis. This was stated by the chairman of the Federation Council's Committee on International Affairs, Grigory Karasin, on Tuesday, February 11, reacting to the words of US President Donald Trump that Ukraine might become part of Russia.

According to the senator, history is well aware of the problems that led to the Ukrainian conflict.

"Trump's statements certainly deserve attention, but the details are important here. It is important to understand that Ukraine's ultra-nationalism, neo-Nazism, into which all this has developed, is quite a complex, difficult phenomenon. So let's hope for the best and strive for it," the politician said in a conversation with Lenta.Ru.

On February 10, Trump said that Ukraine should guarantee the safety of American funds invested in it, because it "could someday become Russia," NSN reports.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov on February 11, did not reject Trump's statements that Ukraine may one day become part of Russia, 360.ru reported.

Peskov clarified that a significant part of Ukraine wants to become the Russian Federation. He recalled that four regions have already become part of Russia.

He added that with the words of the American leader largely correlates with the fact that people voted in the referendum in favor of joining Russia despite the danger, according to the website kp.ru.

Before that, on February 9, the American leader said he had a phone call withRussian President Vladimir Putin on the settlement of the conflict in Ukraine.

On February 6, Trump said that Washington is currently holding "very constructive talks" with Moscow and Kiev to find a way to resolve the current conflict. On the same day, Kellogg said that the American president intends to tighten sanctions against Russia in the oil sector to resolve the conflict in Ukraine.

The special operation to protect Donbass, the start of which Russian President Vladimir Putin announcedon February 24, 2022, is ongoing. The decision was taken against the background of the aggravated situation in the region.
