The doctor told about hypothyroidism hiding behind the symptoms of other diseases

Hypothyroidism is a disease caused by a persistent deficiency of thyroid hormones, which can hide behind the symptoms of other diseases. On February 11, Anna Teplova, a doctor, assistant of the Endocrinology Department of the Institute of Clinical Medicine (ICM) of Pirogov Russian National Research Medical University, told about it.
As an example, she cited complaints of dry skin and its thickening, hair loss and brittle nails, which is called the "dermatologic mask" of thyroid disease.
"Also distinguish "cardiologic mask" when the patient is concerned about arterial hypertension, lipid metabolism disorders, decreased heart rate," the doctor told "Gazeta.Ru".
In addition, Teplova warned that disorders in terms of the gastrointestinal tract, among which may be constipation, bile outflow disorders and jaundice, may also indicate the need to undergo a check of the thyroid gland. "Gynecological mask" of the disease can manifest itself in menstrual disorders and infertility, the expert specified.
"In addition, there is a "psychiatric" mask, in which the patient is faced with depression, a decrease in mental abilities. The presence of the above symptoms is a reason to consult an endocrinologist in order to conduct a detailed examination and determine the tactics of treatment," Teplova said.
She added that untimely treatment of hypothyroidism can provoke complications, including, for example, hydropericardium.
Earlier, on December 11 last year, Maxim Yudin, oncosurgeon and oncoendocrinologist at SM-Clinica, told Izvestia about the danger of nodules in the thyroid gland. According to him, one of the symptoms of their presence is discomfort when swallowing. The main danger of nodules is that they can turn out to be malignant. Nodular formations can be both hereditary and spontaneous, the doctor emphasized.
