Russians warned of new fraudulent schemes in the run-up to the holidays

In the run-up to the holidays, attackers have come up with new fraud schemes. This was reported in the IS-company Angara Security on February 11.
The experts specified that fraudsters are going to become active on February 14 and March 8 and can report about a supposed parcel with a gift from a relative who placed an order in an expensive salon. So, a Russian can rashly confirm the delivery address and tell the code from the SMS to the courier, who will "deliver the parcel".
"It can be a code from any service that is interesting to attackers. Given that numerous bank card leaks have been recorded earlier, it could be codes to confirm payment," Victoria Varlamova, head of security at Angara SOC, specified in a conversation with TASS.
She suggested that attackers can also learn personal data from early leaks to the Internet. According to her, knowing the card number, full name and delivery address, fraudsters can "pull off" schemes to steal money from compromised cards.
In addition, the company noted that people are often ready to accept gifts from strangers and give them any information in order to get a surprise. Angara Security experts urged Russians to be careful and avoid "gifts" from strangers, allegedly distant relatives or "secret admirers".
Earlier in the day, at the Izvestia IIC press center, Anton Nemkin, a member of the State Duma Committee on Information Policy, Information Technology and Communications, shared that phishing has become the most common type of fraud in 2024. He also added that Russians have often started receiving messages from managers at their place of work about a prize drawing.
