Porridge is one of the most popular types of breakfast. In most cases, such a breakfast will be useful. However, there are categories of people who should refuse porridge on an empty stomach, warned in a conversation with Izvestia on February 12, Oksana Mikhaleva, endocrinologist, SM-Clinica nutritionist, candidate of medical sciences.

According to her, there are three categories of people who can be harmed by such a breakfast.

The first group is people with intolerance to lactose or cow's milk protein.

"In this case, we are talking about milk porridges. Since they are cooked with milk, their consumption can cause unpleasant symptoms in those who suffer from lactase deficiency or allergy to milk protein. Among the symptoms: intestinal discomfort, pain, abdominal bloating, stool disturbance, and skin rashes are also possible," the doctor explained.

Secondly, it should not be consumed by people with gluten intolerance.

"Gluten is a protein found in grains such as wheat, rye and barley. It may be present in oats as an impurity after industrial processing. In most cases gluten is harmless, but there are categories of patients for whom it is contraindicated: patients with celiac disease, gluten allergy and hypersensitivity to gluten. In these cases, you should avoid porridge based on these cereals", - said the doctor.

The third category is people with excess body weight and obesity.

"It may seem unexpected, but people with excess weight I would not recommend starting the day with porridge. Breakfast should include protein foods combined with complex carbohydrates. For example, scrambled eggs with vegetables and whole-grain bread or cottage cheese. Porridge can be left for the morning meal, but not more than once or twice a week," advised Mikhaleva.

At the same time, according to her, it is better to give preference to whole-grain cereals or those that require cooking for 10-20 minutes. They have more fiber and vitamins compared to refined products.

Earlier, on January 29, Natia Chekhoeva, a gastroenterologist and endoscopist at Gastro Clinic, told Izvestia that systematic consumption of excessive calories inevitably overloads the body. This not only increases body weight, but also puts a strain on internal organs, including the heart, liver, and pancreas.
