A U.S. Army unit has been deployed in Estonia at the Reedo military base near the border with Russia. This was reported on Tuesday, February 11, by Estonian broadcaster ERR with reference to the Estonian Defense Forces.

"After a ceremony held at the Reedo base near the town of Võru, the fifth squadron of the U.S. Army's Seventh Cavalry Regiment is deployed to Reedo and assigned to the Estonian Armed Forces (Armed Forces. - Ed.), Second Infantry Brigade," the publication said.

According to the publication, the regiment's service will last until September. In addition, it is noted that the unit is equipped with "the most modern equipment". This battalion is a reconnaissance battalion and will take part in all exercises, reports ERR.

Earlier, on February 7, United States Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth said that despite the alliance of the United States and NATO, the alliance should spend more money on defense.

Prior to that, Estonian Prime Minister Kristen Mihal said on January 21 that Estonia should raise the country's defense spending to 5% of gross domestic product (GDP). He noted that Estonia's target for 2026 is 3.7%, adding that investments should be accelerated.

Earlier, on December 25, 2024, the British publication Independent said that Finland, Latvia and Estonia said they were unable to confront Russia without US involvement. Michal pointed out that NATO needs to strengthen its defense capabilities.
