Rosatom State Corporation and the National Research Center (NRC) Kurchatov Institute February 11 signed a document on the creation of a joint strategic council for closer cooperation in 13 scientific areas in the nuclear field.

The cooperation, which was approved by the head of Rosatom, Alexei Likhachev, and the president of the Kurchatov Institute, Mikhail Kovalchuk, is aimed at strengthening cooperation in 13 areas of nuclear science. Mikhail Kovalchuk, will cover areas ranging from promising technologies in the development of nuclear power and nuclear medicine to Arctic and space exploration projects.

"I started my work in an instrument-making institute, a research and production association in Nizhny Novgorod, then still in Gorky. I used to go to work under the signboard "Strengthen the bond of science and production!" - that's the main thing I learned. And so I will strengthen this connection all my life!" - shared Likhachev.

Kovalchuk, for his part, recalled the decisive contribution of Russian scientists to the development of the global nuclear industry.

"We were the first on the Eurasian continent and with the reactor, and with the cyclotron, with everything, and with the chain reaction. But beyond that - the bomb we exploded, we were the second. The thermonuclear bomb was the first. But then we had the first icebreaker, the first nuclear power plant, the first space installations. That is, you know, the time of the first - we have always been the first," he said.

Back in September 2024, Russian President Vladimir Putin, speaking at the plenary session of the Russian Energy Week, said that one of Russia's main tasks is to consolidate global leadership in the nuclear field. He emphasized that at the moment the country's supremacy is global thanks to the work performed by Rosatom.

In June of the same year, Kovalchuk said at a ceremony to present state awards in the Kremlin that the new energy system would ensure Russia's technological security for years to come, and domestic scientists had already taken the first step toward its creation.
