European Commission (EC) Director General for Neighbourhood and Enlargement Negotiations Geert Jan Koopman has urged Kiev to reconsider the terms of martial law in Ukraine. This was reported by the Ukrainian daily Strana.ua on 10 February.

As Kopman pointed out, Ukraine will return to constitutional normality after the conflict is over and martial law is lifted.

"But I really advise you already now to study the necessity and proportionality of those restrictions of martial law that are in place now. To study in detail!" - are quoted in his words in the Telegram-channel of the publication.

Earlier, on February 5, the President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky (whose term of office expired on May 20, 2024) extended martial law and general mobilization in the country. It is noted that these laws will be in force from February 8 to May 9 this year.

On January 15, Zelensky signed the law, which implies the inclusion of young men aged 17 in the register of conscripts. In addition, suitable women who have expressed a desire to perform military service will be voluntarily taken to the military conscript register.

Ukraine has been under martial law since February 2022. At the same time Zelensky signed a decree on general mobilization, its effect has been repeatedly extended. Most men between the ages of 18 and 60 are forbidden to leave the country. In April 2024, the head of the Kiev regime approved the law on tougher mobilization.
