Ukraine has pledged not to attack the infrastructure of the Turkish Stream gas pipeline as part of the energy security guarantees received by Hungary from the European Commission (EC). Peter Szijjarto, Hungary's Minister of Foreign Affairs and External Economic Relations, said in an interview with RIA Novosti on February 11.

"We were presented with a list of guarantees on three issues. First, Ukraine must not stop oil deliveries through its territory. Second, they will not attack the Turkish Stream infrastructure," Szijjártó said.

In addition, the minister added, the European Commission should "very quickly" start negotiations with Kiev on the resumption of gas transit through Ukrainian territory.

Earlier, on January 31, Hungarian President Viktor Orban said that his country intends to veto the extension of anti-Russian sanctions by the European Union if the EC fails to fulfill its promises on energy security. According to Orban, the EC promised Hungary to get Ukraine to resume transit of Russian oil through the Druzhba pipeline and to protect the Turkish Stream gas pipeline from attacks.

Before that, on January 25, Szijjártó said after a telephone conversation with Turkish Energy and Natural Resources Minister Alparslan Bayraktar that Hungary and Turkey considered Kiev's attacks on the Turkish Stream pipeline unacceptable. The Hungarian Foreign Minister reminded that "Turkish Stream" plays an important role in providing the country with natural gas. According to him, the fuel is supplied through the pipeline continuously, but it continues to be attacked in various ways, which could lead to a malfunction that would hinder the safe supply of gas to Central Europe.

On January 17, Russia's permanent representative to the United Nations Vasily Nebenzya said that the attack carried out on the compressor station of the Turkish Stream gas pipeline was carried out by the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU) following a tip-off from the United States and Britain. At the time, he indicated that one of the reasons for this was to prevent the United States and Britain from launching a worldwide investigation into the Nord Stream incident.

On the same day, Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova also reported that Ukraine had attacked the compressor station of the Turkish Stream gas pipeline in Krasnodar Region on a tip-off from the USA.
