A bus accident in Guatemala kills 53 people


At least 53 people were killed in a traffic accident involving an intercity bus and two cars in Guatemala. This was reported on February 10 by the information portal Soy502 with reference to the local prosecutor's office.
The accident occurred in the morning on February 10. The portal previously reported that after a collision with two passenger cars, the bus fell into a ravine on the Belize Bridge, connecting with the La Paz Dam.
"An intercity bus fell into a ravine on the La Paz highway. The Public Prosecutor's Office has confirmed that 53 people died at the scene of the crash, half of whom have already been identified by relatives," the publication said.
The National Forensic Institute has been ordered to conduct toxicology tests on the bus driver and his assistant. The prosecutor's office is monitoring CCTV cameras in the area surrounding the scene and collecting witness statements.
Guatemalan President Bernardo Arevalo declared three days of mourning for the victims.
Earlier, on February 8, broadcaster CBC reported a crash in the Canadian province of Ontario that killed one person and injured 11 others. The deceased was a 49-year-old man.
