The State Duma reported on a possible ban on calling children strange names

Deputies of the State Duma (Duma) have developed a new bill aimed at restricting the use of strange names for children. This was announced on February 10 by the first deputy chairman of the Duma Committee on Family Protection, Paternity, Maternity and Childhood Tatyana Butskaya during a live broadcast in her Telegram channel.
"It is necessary to protect children from the fact that they can become Dumplings, Tables, Nightstands," Butskaya said.
She clarified that the bill had been conceived a long time ago. Initially, it prohibited to call girls by male names and boys by female names. But the project was revised, as a result of which, the deputies decided to create a "closed list" of authorized names.
According to Butskaya, the document will be tabled as soon as the authorized names are determined. She added that at the moment the text of the bill is already ready.
Earlier, on January 30, 2024, the State Duma called for allowing a child to change his name because of bullying without parental permission. Deputy speaker of the State Duma Vladislav Davankov addressed the relevant proposal to the Ministry of Labor of the Russian Federation. According to him, children with unusual or rare names often face bullying at school.
