British man James Howells is considering buying a part of the landfill to search for his missing in 2013 hard drive with bitcoins worth more than £600 million, the British newspaper The Guardian reported on February 10.

According to the publication, last month the man lost his case for permission to search the Newport landfill site. The city council, meanwhile, has announced plans to close and seal the proposed site to permanently end the Briton's hope of recovering the fortune disk.

"If the Newport City Council agrees, I am potentially interested in buying the landfill "as is" and have discussed that option with investment partners, and that's something that's very important to us," the publication quotes Howells as saying.

It is specified that the city authorities intend to close the landfill in order to build a solar energy production plant on one of its sites.

Earlier, in November 2024, it was reported that the Briton is looking for a hard disk with cryptocurrency in a landfill for 11 years. It was noted that the fortune was mistakenly disposed of by the man's ex-girlfriend in 2013. Howells offered the administration of Newport a payment upon approval of the excavation, but was refused.
