NATO's eastward expansion is unacceptable for Russia. This was announced by Russian Ambassador to Moldova Oleg Ozerov on February 10.

"Attempts to expand [NATO] to the East, what is called, without restrictions, are certainly unacceptable for Russia, as our president[Vladimir Putin] said very fundamentally, rigidly and with complete certainty during his speeches, including speeches in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to the leadership of the ministry on June 14 last year," he said in an interview with RIA Novosti.

He added that it was very important for the Moldovan government to listen to what the Russian leader was saying.

On the same day, Ozerov said that Russia expects normalization of relations with Moldova after parliamentary elections in the country. He added that the upcoming elections should also create conditions for the resumption of dialog on the problems of bilateral relations between the countries, which will have to be solved sooner or later.

In April 2024, the US declassified documents saying that NATO was not going to interfere in the internal affairs of Russia and CIS countries after the collapse of the USSR. In July, it also became known that former U.S. Vice President Al Gore promised NATO expansion only after dialog with Russia.

Putin recalled back in 2023 that after NATO's promise not to expand eastward, there were five waves of the alliance's expansion, and the entry of Finland and Sweden into the bloc was another approach to Russia's borders.
