US President Donald Trump's statements about the possibility of buying the Gaza Strip and displacing Palestinians from their territory are scandalous and contrary to international law. This statement was made by German Chancellor Olaf Scholz during a debate with Christian Democratic Union (CDU) Chairman Friedrich Merz on February 9.

Trump, during a meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Feb. 5, called Gaza a demolition site and suggested Palestinians should be resettled in Jordan, Egypt or other countries.

"Trump's statement about buying the Gaza Strip and relocating residents is a scandal. Resettlement is unacceptable and contrary to international law," Tagesspiegel newspaper quoted Scholz as saying.

Merz noted that he shares the German chancellor's assessment on the issue, but clarified that it is too early to jump to conclusions about the American leader's intentions and it is worth seeing what he said will translate into real action.

Netanyahu said during his meeting with Trump on February 5 that Israel intends to destroy the Palestinian movement Hamas, return all Jewish hostages and eliminate the threat to the country from the Gaza Strip.

At the same time, Palestinian Ambassador to Russia Abdel Hafiz Nofal noted that the Palestinian side opposes the US president's proposal to relocate Palestinians from Gaza to Arab countries.

Later in the press conference, Trump said that the US will take control of the Gaza Strip. At the same time, he specified that the state would own the territory and be responsible for its restoration, The New York Times (NYT) reported.

The situation in the Middle East escalated on the morning of October 7, 2023, when the Palestinian radical movement Hamas subjected the territory of Israel to a massive rocket attack from the Gaza Strip. On the same day, Israel began retaliatory strikes.
