Russia is ready to help the people of Syria in rebuilding the country after the crisis. This was stated by Russia's permanent representative to the UN Vasily Nebenzya in a conversation with RIA Novosti on February 10.

"I would like to emphasize that Russia's friendship with the Syrian people is time-tested and does not depend on the political conjuncture. We are ready to continue to provide the Syrians with the necessary assistance," he noted.

At the same time, the diplomat said, Moscow is confident in the Syrians' ability to cope with the restoration of the state without external intervention. Russia also hopes for a positive role of the UN in accompanying the internal dialog in the Arab republic, Nebenzya added.

Earlier, on February 7, the defense minister of the Syrian transitional government, Murhaf Abu Qasra, said Damascus would agree to the retention of Russian military bases in Syria if it would benefit the republic.

On January 29, Ahmed al-Sharaa, the head of the new administration of Syria's interim government, was declared the country's president for a transitional period. The new Syrian authorities announced the termination of the former constitution and the dissolution of the country's parliament.

The day before, a Russian delegation, which included Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Bogdanov and Russian presidential special envoy Alexander Lavrentiev, visited Damascus and held talks with al-Sharaa. The talks, from the point of view of the Russian delegation, were "traditionally friendly in nature," Bogdanov specified.

Last December 26, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said that Russia is interested in dialog with the new Syrian authorities.

The Russian Foreign Ministry reported on December 8 that Bashar al-Assad, after negotiations with the opposition, left the post of head of state and left the country, indicating to conduct the transfer of power peacefully. The situation in Syria escalated as a result of a major attack by armed formations in Aleppo and Idlib, which began on November 28 and led to the Syrian army's retaliation against the militants.
