Excessive consumption of sweet drinks annually causes more than 1.1 million cases of cardiovascular diseases worldwide. Rashid Songurov, cardiologist and doctor of functional diagnostics at the European Medical Center (EMC), told about it on February 9.

According to him, one glass of grape or apple juice may contain up to half of the daily norm of sugar. The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends that sugar consumption should not exceed 10% of the total number of calories per day, and even better - no more than 5% (about 25 g or six teaspoons). However, even one sugary drink can quickly exceed this norm, especially if a person additionally consumes fruits, desserts and other foods with high sugar content.

The cardiologist emphasizes that such drinks provoke weight gain, the development of insulin resistance and metabolic disorders that can lead to diabetes and heart disease.

"Excess sugar contributes to increased triglyceride levels and decreased levels of 'good' cholesterol (HDL). This increases the risk of developing atherosclerosis - a disease in which the walls of arteries thicken and lose elasticity, subsequently the progression of the disease can lead to a heart attack or stroke," Songurov told "Gazeta.Ru".

In addition, constant consumption of drinks with high sugar content contributes to the increase of visceral fat (deposition around internal organs). Subsequently, it is one of the causes of coronary heart disease.

According to him, excessive cravings for sweets can signal a deficiency of elements such as chromium, phosphorus, sulfur and tryptophan in the body. He advises to carefully study the composition of drinks on the packaging, avoid energy drinks, packaged juices and sodas. Instead, it is better to give preference to water with natural additives - lemon, mint or cucumber, and drink herbal and green tea without sugar.

Earlier, February 6, Doctor of Medical Sciences, nutritionist Margarita Koroleva told about the benefits of eating porridge for breakfast. According to the specialist, porridge contains important components that provide our body with strength.

On the same day doctor-gastroenterologist of JSC "Medicine" (clinic of academician Roitberg), Candidate of Medical Sciences Evgeny Belousov said that pumpkin is rich in vitamins and is ideal for dietary and healthy eating, but if used incorrectly it can cause harm. He noted that due to its high content of carotene, vitamins K, C, E, and almost all B vitamins, pumpkin is valued for its nutritional properties. At the same time, its seeds are rich in zinc and the pulp is low in calories.
