- Scholz called it wrong for FRG to supply Ukraine with weapons to strike deep into Russian Federation

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz on Sunday, February 9, called it wrong for his country to supply Ukraine with weapons that can be used to strike deep into Russia.
"I think it is wrong for us to supply [Ukraine] with weapons capable of operating with great destructive power far into the depths of Russia," Scholz said during a debate on the ZDF television channel's YouTube channel with Friedrich Merz, the candidate for German chancellor from the Christian Democratic and Christian Social Union bloc.
Scholz said it was "exactly the kind of step" that one should not take if one has a responsibility for Germany.
Earlier, on December 16 last year, Scholz said that Germany would not help the Kiev authorities to the detriment of its own security, in particular by transferring Taurus missiles and sending its military to Ukraine.
Also on December 4, 2024, the German chancellor said that Germany would not authorize Ukraine to launch strikes with long-range weapons deep into Russian territory, and would not supply Taurus cruise missiles.
Western countries have stepped up military and financial support for Ukraine against the backdrop of Russia's special operation to protect Donbass, which was announced by Russian President Vladimir Putin on February 24, 2022, after the situation in the region worsened due to shelling by the Ukrainian military.
