Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov on February 10 congratulated his colleagues on the Day of Diplomatic Worker.

"We pay tribute to the emerging tradition of honoring our country's diplomatic workers, which dates back to 2003, when, by decision of Russian President Vladimir Putin, we first solemnly celebrated this significant date," he said.

Lavrov recalled that the current year in the diplomatic calendar is special, as it passes under the sign of the 80th anniversary of the victory in the Great Patriotic War and World War II.

"Today, when Russia once again faces momentous challenges, the primary task and sacred duty is to defend the peace based on the legal outcome of the Second World War. There is no doubt that this noble goal will be achieved despite the efforts of our ill-wishers and open enemies," the Foreign Minister said.

He also informed about Russia's plans to continue building up multifaceted cooperation with all sensible partners and, above all, with the world majority - the states of the near abroad, Greater Eurasia, Africa and Latin America.

"By tradition, we pay tribute to our dear veterans - both those who are already in well-deserved retirement and those who are still with us in the ranks. I would like to address our young people of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs - you joined the friendly staff of the Ministry at a critical juncture in history, and you should carry the banner of Russian diplomacy forward. <...> And, of course, I want to thank all the relatives and friends of our diplomats," Lavrov concluded.

Russia celebrates Diplomatic Worker's Day, or Diplomat's Day, on February 10. It is a professional holiday of all those who represent the interests of the country on the world stage. Diplomat's Day was established by presidential decree in 2002. The date of the celebration was not chosen by chance. It is to this day refers the earliest mention of the Embassy Order - Russia's first foreign policy department, formed under Ivan the Terrible. Every year on this holiday solemn events are held in the Foreign Ministry building on Smolensk-Sennaya Square in Moscow. Colleagues are congratulated by the Minister of Foreign Affairs. Diplomats who have distinguished themselves in service are honored with various awards. Celebrations are also held at the MGIMO, the alma mater of Russian diplomacy.
