The government of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) on Sunday welcomed the decision of the summit of the Heads of State of the East African Community (EAC) and the Southern African Development Community (SADC), which said that the Luanda and Nairobi processes must be resumed to bring an early end to the crisis in the east of the country. This was reported by Actualité on February 9.

"[DRC capital] Kinshasa confirmed that the two processes remain at the center of diplomatic efforts to restore peace. The Luanda process aims to implement the agreed plan, which includes the neutralization of the FDLR [Democratic Forces for the Liberation of Rwanda] grouping, the lifting of Rwanda's defensive measures and the withdrawal of its troops from Congolese territory. In parallel, the Nairobi process envisages consultations with non-state actors involved in the conflict," the media said.

The Congolese government emphasized that the implementation of all the plans outlined will depend on the rapid and coordinated resumption of the processes in Luanda and Nairobi.

DR Congo authorities supported the strengthening of interaction between the two processes under the auspices of the African Union, and also reported the possibility of appointing new mediators to maintain the same momentum of conflict resolution.

"Kinshasa warned that any attempt to divert attention from the true causes of the conflict would be rejected, recalling that the current crisis is above all an attack on its sovereignty and security," Actualité reported

On February 5, the UN peacekeeping mission in the DRC reported that at least 2,900 people were killed in fighting for the town of Goma in DR Congo. The organization held a press conference via video link from Goma. It is noted that the death toll may increase.

On January 28, Russian Permanent Representative to the UN Vasily Nebenzya, in turn, emphasized that Russia strongly condemns the actions of the Congolese rebel group M23 in the DRC and calls for a cessation of hostilities.

The situation in DR Congo escalated after the government severed diplomatic relations with Rwanda and accused the country of supporting the rebels who launched a new offensive on the town of Goma. The DRC Foreign Ministry on January 26 announced the immediate withdrawal of its diplomats in the Rwandan capital of Kigali and ordered the country's embassy in Kinshasa to cease operations within 48 hours.
