UN calls Trump's plan to resettle Palestinians from Gaza illegal

US President Donald Trump's plan to resettle Palestinians from the Gaza Strip is illegal and violates international law. This was stated by Navi Pillay, chair of the independent commission established by the United Nations (UN) Human Rights Council (HRC), to Politico on February 9.
According to her, the U.S. leader is ignorant of international law.
"Forcibly displacing an occupied group is an international crime and amounts to ethnic cleansing," Pillay said.
The chairwoman of the independent commission noted that there is no law that would allow Trump to implement his plan to transfer Palestinians from Gaza.
Earlier, on February 5, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said during a meeting with Trump that Israel intends to destroy the Palestinian movement Hamas, return all Jewish hostages and eliminate the threat to the country from the Gaza Strip. The American leader, in turn, called Gaza a demolition site and suggested resettling Palestinians in Jordan, Egypt or other countries.
At the same time, Palestinian Ambassador to Russia Abdel Hafiz Nofal noted that the Palestinian side opposes the US president's proposal to relocate Palestinians from Gaza to Arab countries.
Later in the press conference, Trump said that the United States will take control of the Gaza Strip. At the same time, he specified that the state would own the territory and be responsible for its restoration, The New York Times (NYT) reported.
The situation in the Middle East escalated on the morning of October 7, 2023, when the Palestinian radical movement Hamas subjected the territory of Israel to a massive rocket attack from the Gaza Strip. On the same day, Israel began retaliatory strikes.
