Five Thai nationals released by Hamas returned to their home country


Five Thai citizens released from the captivity of the Palestinian radical movement Hamas have returned home. The Times of Israel reported on February 9.
"The five Thai workers, freed after being held hostage by Palestinian terrorists in Gaza for more than a year, arrived in Bangkok on Sunday. Their families wept tears of joy and embraced their loved ones," the publication said.
Surasak Rumnao, 32, Watchara Sriaw, 33, Sathian Suwannakkham, 35, Pongsak Taenna, 36, and Bannawat Saetao, 27, were released as part of a ceasefire agreement in the Gaza Strip on Jan. 30 after 482 days in captivity.
Israeli Ambassador to Thailand Orna Sagiv and Foreign Minister Marit Sangiamphong also welcomed the freed men at the capital's Suvarnabhumi Airport.
Earlier, on February 4, deputy head of the Hamas political bureau Musa Abu Marzouk said that Hamas would take Russia's wishes into account when considering the release of Donetsk-born Maxim Harkin, who is being held hostage in the Gaza Strip.
Earlier, on January 25, it was reported that Deputy Foreign Minister of Russia Mikhail Bogdanov in a telephone conversation with Moussa Abu Marzouk noted the interest in the release of Russian Trufanov and native of Donbass Kharkin held in Gaza. It is specified that during the conversation they discussed the need to provide humanitarian assistance to the population of the conflict zone.
The agreement on a ceasefire in Gaza became known on January 15. On the same day Bogdanov held telephone talks with the leadership of the Palestinian movement and noted the priority of the release of Russian citizens held captive. The ceasefire regime in the Gaza Strip began to operate in the morning of January 19.
The situation in the Middle East escalated on the morning of October 7, 2023, when Hamas subjected the territory of Israel to a massive rocket attack from the Gaza Strip. On the same day, Israel began retaliatory strikes.
