ICC chief prosecutor could face U.S. sanctions

The chief prosecutor of the International Criminal Court (ICC), Karim Khan, may be included in the US sanctions lists by order of US President Donald Trump. Reuters reported.
"International Criminal Court prosecutor Karim Khan could become the first person to be sanctioned by US President Donald Trump and targeted by the ICC over investigations against US citizens or allies," the agency reported, citing two sources.
Khan's name may appear in an as yet unpublished annex to the ICC sanctions executive order that Trump signed a day earlier.
It is specified that the sanctions include freezing the assets in the United States of the specified persons and a ban on visiting them and their families to the United States.
On February 7, the ICC condemned the sanctions, pledging to stand by its staff and "continue to provide justice and hope to millions of innocent victims of atrocities around the world in all situations they face." The court called on all 125 states parties and civil society to unite to bring justice.
The financial sanctions imposed against the ICC by the American leader became known the day before. According to Trump, the actions of this court are "an attack on the sovereignty of the United States" and "undermine the essential work of the government in the field of national security and foreign policy". For this decision, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu thanked Trump.
Earlier, on January 20, it was reported that the ICC in The Hague was preparing to impose aggressive economic sanctions from the Trump administration. According to The Guardian, the destabilization of the court's work may be related to the cancellation of arrest warrants for Netanyahu and former Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Galant.
