Protests were held in London against the construction of the Chinese embassy

In London, more than a thousand people protested against the construction of a "mega-embassy" of the People's Republic of China (PRC). This was reported by The Guardian newspaper on Saturday, February 8.
According to the newspaper, protesters gathered at the Royal Mint, not far from the Tower, where the construction of the Chinese embassy is planned. China recently bought the 2 hectare site and has proposed to turn it into the largest embassy in Europe.
The protesters, who included many Hong Kong natives who have taken refuge in Britain, expressed concern that the embassy could be used to "control" and "illegally detain dissenters."
Earlier on Feb. 3, the NYT pointed to the PRC' s ability to strengthen its influence on the world stage under U.S. President Donald Trump thanks to his administration's spats with foreign allies and partners. For example, at a time when the US president was "waging a war of words" with Colombia over the military deportation of migrants, the Chinese ambassador to the island said relations between Beijing and Bogota were at their best stage in decades.
