In the Vatican, a vandal damaged several antique candelabras worth €30 thousand in St. Peter's Basilica. This was reported by Italian newspaper Messaggero on February 7.

According to the newspaper, a 40-year-old Romanian citizen got under the bronze canopy in the presence of tourists, which was created by Italian architect of the XVI century Gianlorenzo Bernini, and then began to tear off the candelabra and bedspreads.

It is noted that the security of the cathedral detained the man and handed him over to the local police. At the moment the motives of the act of the vandal are unknown.

Earlier, on January 26, two historical statues suffered at the hands of vandals in Melbourne on the eve of Australia Day. It was noted that the greatest damage was sustained by the statue of John Batman, one of the founders and pioneers of Melbourne. It was literally split into two halves. A monument dedicated to the heroes of the Australian and New Zealand Military Corps was also desecrated. The statue was sprayed with red paint and inscribed with the words "take back the land" and "the colony will fall".
