Scholz pointed to the need for an increased NATO presence in Greenland
NATO should increase its presence in Greenland because of the "danger of border changes". This was stated by German Chancellor Olaf Scholz in an interview with RND on February 8.
According to him, the principle of inviolability of borders should be applied to all countries.
"Climate change is changing the Arctic region, opening up new shipping lanes in which China and Russia have a great interest. So there are legitimate security issues that we need to discuss with each other within NATO. In my opinion, we should increase NATO's presence in Greenland," he said.
At the same time, he made no mention of US President Donald Trump's plans to seize the island, about which there was a question from journalists.
Earlier, on February 7, the British newspaper The Daily Telegraph reported that NATO is discussing sending troops to Greenland amid statements by US President Donald Trump about the need to annex the island. It noted that representatives of the countries of the alliance during informal talks discussed the possibility of applying against the United States the provision on collective defense.
Before that, on January 26, the American leader expressed confidence that the United States will get Greenland. The day before, Trump insisted on acquiring the island during a telephone conversation with Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen. He was reportedly aggressive and conflicted.
On December 22, 2024, Trump stated that it was an absolute necessity for the US to own and control Greenland. Prior to that, he had expressed interest in buying the island from Denmark in 2019, but was turned down. In the coming year, Trump was also indicated to Trump that the island is not for sale and will not be sold, but Denmark can cooperate more with the US.
