In France found nine sarcophagi about 1.3 thousand years old
In the south-west of France during excavations in the city of Bordeaux archaeologists found nine sarcophagi about 1.3 thousand years old. This was reported by the newspaper Figaro on February 7.
"They were buried 1,300 years ago. Nine sarcophagi of the Merovingian era, dating from V to VIII century, were discovered during preliminary excavations," - stated in the material.
According to the newspaper, archaeologists also found traces of funerary practices before the XVII century, namely three burials in coffins XI-XIII centuries and four burials in the ground and coffins XV-XVII centuries.
It is indicated that a total of about 20-30 burials were found.
Earlier, in July last year, on the beach of the resort complex of St. Constantine and Helen near the Bulgarian city of Varna found an ancient Roman sarcophagus. During the initial examination experts concluded that the sarcophagus with relief decoration belongs to the Roman era, probably to the period of II-III century AD. Its dimensions are about 90x235x75 cm.
