Media pointed to NATO discussions on sending troops to Greenland
NATO is discussing sending troops to Greenland amid US President Donald Trump's statements about the need to annex the island. This was reported on February 7 by the British newspaper The Daily Telegraph.
It noted that representatives of the countries of the alliance during informal talks discussed the possibility of using the collective defense clause against the United States.
"Questions were even raised about whether Article 5, the provision on mutual defense of the Western military alliance, could be applied in the event of an American invasion of a NATO member state," the publication indicated in its material.
However, as specified by "Gazeta.Ru", such a scenario was quickly rejected, because it would require the consent of all members of the North Atlantic Alliance, including the United States.
The day before it was reported that Greenland's ruling party Siumut ("Forward") plans to hold a vote on independence after the general elections on March 11. The main issues of the election campaign were Greenland's desire for independence and its relations with Denmark and the United States under the Trump administration, which has repeatedly expressed a desire to "get" the strategically important island.
Earlier, on January 31, The Examiner reported on Trump's proposal to expand NATO's military presence in the Arctic. According to sources, the alliance believes that strengthening NATO's presence in the Arctic can satisfy security interests while ensuring US participation in the new initiative.
Prior to that, on January 26, the American leader expressed confidence in the United States getting Greenland. The day before, Trump insisted on acquiring the island during a telephone conversation with Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen. He was reportedly aggressive and conflicted.
On December 22, 2024, Trump stated that it was an absolute necessity for the US to own and control Greenland. Prior to that, he had expressed interest in buying the island from Denmark in 2019, but was turned down. In the coming year, Trump was also indicated to Trump that the island is not for sale and will not be sold, but Denmark can cooperate more with the US.
