The Russian Armed Forces (AF) liberated the city of Dzerzhinsk (Ukrainian name - Toretsk) in the DNR, the Defense Ministry said on February 7.

"As a result of active offensive actions by units of the 1st, 9th and 132nd Guards separate motorized rifle brigades of the 51st Army and the volunteer formation "Veterans" of the grouping of troops "Center" liberated the city of Dzerzhinsk of the Donetsk People's Republic," the ministry said.

Like the city of Novgorodskoye (New York), occupied in August 2024, Dzerzhinsk (Toretsk) is strategically important for Russia. Behind them runs the Konstantinovka-Avdeevka highway, which supplies the AFU with ammunition and provisions. In addition, Toretsk is a dominant height from which all of Gorlovka is observed and from which the "Hymars" and heavy barrel artillery were fired. The town was covered by slag heaps and an industrial zone, which made the offensive difficult.

Dzerzhinsk is five kilometers from Horlivka and is an important transportation hub. Its liberation will reduce the likelihood of shelling of Horlivka by the AFU, and also opens a bridgehead for the Russian troops to attack Konstantinovka, which is 11 kilometers from the city and is an important point for the formation of the "cauldron" in Chasovy Yar.

Success in this direction also complicates for the AFU the supply of defense in Chasovy Yar and advancement along the routes from Pokrovsk (Krasnoarmeysk) to Slavyansk and Kramatorsk.

At the end of July, it became known that fierce fighting was taking place in the area, and the AFU was unsuccessfully confronting the Russian army.

During the entire period of active hostilities, Russian troops tried at least two dozen times to squeeze the Ukrainian defenders in the vicinity of Dzerzhinsk (Toretsk) and Novgorodsk (New York). At the end of July 2024, Russian troops entered Toretsk, and in early August it became known about the successes in New York.

Military expert, retired Colonel Viktor Litovkin explained to Izvestia that there is no exact timeframe for the capture of the city, because the Russian Armed Forces take care of their soldiers, unlike the enemy. Shortening the operation is an unjustified risk that the Russian army will not take, so the offensive will be gradual, he said.

According to public data, the population of Dzerzhinsk was 86,000 by 2001. By the beginning of the SWO, it had shrunk to 35,000 in the city itself and 73,000 in the agglomeration.
