Auto expert explained the possible harm of Ai-98 gasoline for the engine

According to a number of studies, due to the use of gasoline with a higher octane number (for example, Ai-98 instead of Ai-92), the power increase can be about 7%, and fuel consumption can be reduced by about 6%. However, the use of fuel with a higher octane number than recommended by the manufacturer, can cause serious damage to the engine, said the director of after-sales service department of the GC "AutoSpecCenter" Igor Serebryakov, reports "Rossiyskaya Gazeta " on February 7.

According to the auto expert, octane number is not a universal indicator of gasoline quality. It is an index of detonation resistance of fuel, which characterizes its ability to resist self-ignition under the influence of high temperature and pressure in the combustion chamber.

"A low octane number by itself does not mean poor gasoline quality. Fuel with a lower octane rating can be of good quality if it meets the requirements stated by the vehicle manufacturer. The choice of the optimal octane number is determined primarily by the design features of the internal combustion engine," explained the expert.

According to him, when using gasoline with a higher octane number than recommended by the car manufacturer, incomplete combustion of fuel may occur. As a result, unburned fuel enters the exhaust system and leads to a decrease in fuel efficiency and an increase in harmful emissions. At the same time, high temperatures occur, which can contribute to premature engine wear.
