Attorneys general of 12 states in the US intend to restrict Musk and DOGE
Representatives of 12 U.S. states intend to demand through the court to restrict access to information to the U.S. Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), headed by American entrepreneur Ilon Musk. This was announced on February 6 by Attorney General of New York Letitia James.
According to the Associated Press (AP), 12 attorneys general, including Letitia James of New York, said in a statement that they are taking action in defense of the Constitution, the right to privacy and necessary funding.
"As the richest man in the world, Ilon Musk is not used to being told 'no,' but in our country, no one is above the law. The president does not have the authority to divulge our personal information to anyone, and he cannot cut federal benefits approved by Congress," the statement said.
On this day, Reuters learned of the Democrats' call for an investigation into Musk's team. According to the publication, lawmakers called on the deputy inspectors general of several federal agencies to investigate potential national security violations. It is noted that these agencies include the U.S. Treasury, the Office of Personnel Management, the Department of Education, the U.S. Agency for International Development and several others.
The day before, NBC News reported that Musk has recently received reminders from the White House that his power is limited. It is noted that aides to US President Donald Trump have made it clear to Musk that he is an employee of the Chief of Staff and should report to White House Chief of Staff Susie Wiles.
On the same day, February 5, the media noted that Musk's team gained access to a secured room at the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) that contained classified documents. The team from DOGE reportedly consisted of four people under the age of 30.
When they attempted to enter the secured room, there was a conflict between them and USAID security, during which one of the DOGE employees called Musk personally, and the latter threatened the guards to involve the U.S. Marshals Service if his team was not allowed to enter.
