Sandu names condition for Transnistria to receive EU aid

In order to receive a €60 million grant from the EU to overcome the energy crisis in the Transdniestrian Moldovan Republic (TMR), it is necessary to start a gradual increase in energy tariffs. This was stated by Moldovan President Maia Sandu on Thursday, February 6.

"One of the conditions is an increase in tariffs. We cannot expect that those who have been paying a symbolic price for years will move to market prices overnight, but a phased increase is a common condition of the EU and the Moldovan government," the president said on TV8.

At the same time, Sandu stressed that Chisinau does not know yet whether Tiraspol will fulfill the EU conditions.

"We've been without heat for a month this winter."

On January 26, Moldovan Deputy Prime Minister for Reintegration Oleg Serebryan said that in 10-15 days all gas and coal reserves in the DMR will run out and the energy crisis will reach a catastrophic level.

Earlier, on January 13, it was reported that Moldova will face electricity shortages for the first time since the beginning of the crisis. It failed to reserve enough energy. It was specified that the company Energocom actively urges citizens to reduce electricity consumption.

Gas supplies from Russia to Moldova and Transnistria stopped on January 1 due to Ukraine 's refusal to extend the agreement on transit through its territory and debts of the Moldovan side to Gazprom. In mid-January, it became known that Russia was ready to provide assistance to the DMR and start humanitarian gas supplies.
