Employees of the department of studying mammoth fauna of the Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia) will establish the age of the fossil steppe bison with the help of radiocarbon analysis. This was reported on February 6 in the press center of the republic in Moscow.

Presumably, the age of the fossil animal is from 25 thousand years.

"It is planned to study the remains by radiocarbon analysis. In addition, an expedition of the Republican Academy of Sciences will be sent to the site of the discovery", - specified in the press center.

The remains of the animal were found in November 2024 in 6 km from the village of Suntar. A local resident Stepan Kardashevsky stumbled upon a large bison skull. He noted that he first noticed the horns, the size of which is much larger than modern bulls. Subsequently, together with colleagues, he sent a photo of the find to scientists of the department for the study of mammoth fauna of the Academy.

Researcher Stanislav Kolesov, in turn, specified that recently on the territory of Yakutia often discover "interesting paleontological finds".

"The discovered medium-sized bison is especially valuable, as both teeth and head are preserved in full," he noted.

Kolesov specified that what distinguishes the bison from other finds is its good preservation, as the skull turned out to be almost intact.

Earlier, on November 20, 2024, a researcher of the department of studying mammoth fauna of the Academy of Sciences of Yakutia Aysen Klimovsky shared with "Izvestia" the uniqueness of the mummy of a saber-toothed cat, which was found on the territory of the region. Scientists assume that it is a cub. According to Klimovsky, nowhere else has such a preservation of homotherium been found.
