U.S. senators praise Trump's Gaza plan
U.S. President Donald Trump, speaking about plans for the Gaza Strip, wants to take decisive action to support American allies. This was stated by Senator from the Republican Party of the state of North Dakota John Hoeven on February 6.
According to him, the American leader is trying to convey to the people that the U.S. is ready to take decisive action to end the conflict.
"I don't think he wants to take over Gaza. This is about a long-term solution, decisive action and the support of our allies," the senator added. A video of his words was published by the Associated Press.
According to Republican Senator Kevin Cramer, Trump is a man who sees what others do not see and says what others do not say. The senator described the US president as a very active leader of the free world who is involved in things. He added, however, that Trump may be resented, but he is only pursuing "the best interests."
Republican Senator Thom Tillis expressed the opinion that Trump wanted to say with his plan that things need to be done differently in Gaza.
"For Gaza to be safe in the long term, there should be no [Palestinian movement] Hamas there. So I think he's right in saying we need to operate from a clean slate. I think overall he is on the right track and we need to eradicate Hamas. This movement cannot be trusted," he added.
For his part, Democratic Senator Chris Murphy said that the American leader is trying to change the subject with his plan and distract people from the problems in the United States.
"So what is Trump doing? He's trying to change the conversation. So he went out in public yesterday and thought, what's the craziest thing I can say? Because I don't want people talking about (American billionaire. - Ed.) Ilon Musk and my billionaire friends stealing the people's money," Murphy noted.
The New York Times reported the day before that Trump's latest statements, including a proposal to establish military control over the Gaza Strip and evict the Palestinians from there, caused contradictory reactions in American society.
On the same day, UN Secretary-General António Guterres urged US President Donald Trump not to resort to ethnic cleansing in the Gaza Strip following his statements on Palestinian resettlement.
At the same time, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov, commenting on Trump's words, reminded that Russia's position on the issue is based on the two-state principle. This thesis, he emphasized, is enshrined in the relevant article of the UN Security Council.
In addition, The Wall Street Journal learned about Trump's conversation with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, during which the American leader said about "prime real estate" in Gaza.
The situation in the Middle East escalated on the morning of October 7, 2023, when Hamas launched a massive rocket attack from the Gaza Strip into Israel. Israel began retaliatory strikes on the same day.
