Gazprom has started supplying Russian gas to Slovakia via the Turkish Stream gas pipeline. This was reported on February 6 by the portal Dennik N, citing the head of Slovak energy operator SPP Vojtech Ferenc.

According to him, Gazprom's supplies started on February 1, and from April their volume should double. Gazprom Export's contract with the Russian supplier is valid until 2034.

"We are not terminating it," Ferenc stated.

Prior to that, on February 3, Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fitzo said that he was working with the European Commission (EC) to organize gas supplies from Azerbaijan. He noted that this would ensure quality and safe gas supplies for domestic consumption of the country. And expressed hope that soon the negotiation process "will bring good news".

Earlier, on January 29, Romanian members of the European Parliament Giorgiana Teodorescu and Adrian-George Axinia expressed concern over Ukraine 's decision to refuse to extend gas transit from Russia to Europe.

Also on January 28, Fitzo said that if the Ukrainian authorities do not resume gas transit, the republic will block all aid from the European Union. He emphasized that "the threat of retaliatory measures is the only language Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky (term expired in May 2024) understands". He said stopping gas transit would cost the EU €500 million a year. Fitzo also called Zelensky an enemy of Slovakia.

Ukraine has officially announced its refusal to extend the agreement with Russia on gas transit to Europe after the contract expires on December 31, 2024. On January 1, 2025, Gazprom said it would suspend gas supplies through Ukraine. On the same day, Fitzo noted that this would have drastic consequences for the European Union, but not for Russia.
